This is an animated music video that I created for the song 靈魂出竅練習曲 (Etude of an Out-of-body Experience) by JNYBeatz and Terrence Lam using TouchDesigner and After Effects.
This song delves into the beauty of meditation, inner peace, and breaking free from life's distractions. It invites listeners to join the singer in a tranquil state where thoughts can wander freely and calmness can be found amidst chaos.
The aim of this project is to encourage viewers to find empowerment in navigating life complexities, embarking on a transformative journey of self-discovery.
Inspirations
I got inspirations from various sources, such as the K-drama "Little Women", epiphyllums and some Chinese Philosophies.
In the Korean drama "Little Women," there is a fictional blue orchid that has a magical effect on those who get exposed to its aroma. People will realize what they really want and when they inhale it too deeply, they'll experience hallucinogenic effects and lose consciousness.
The night-blooming nature of epiphyllums encourages mindfulness and living in the present. Just as the flowers bloom under the cover of darkness, we are reminded to appreciate the beauty and wonder that exists in each passing moment.
"虛實", a term derived from Chinese philosophy, which translates to "emptiness and fullness" or "void and substance.". It embodies the idea of balance and harmony between opposites. It can also be understood as a metaphor for perception and understanding. It suggests that reality is not fixed or absolute but rather a dynamic interplay of different perspectives, interpretations, and levels of awareness. By embracing both the emptiness and fullness of existence, one can attain a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of all things and the ever-changing nature of reality.

Visual Map

In this piece of work, I used different design techniques to make the visuals more interesting. The structure of the music video is like a thematic montage, I connect scenes through an idea rather than following a strict storyline. I used layering to add depth, making the images look richer and more detailed. I also experimented with symmetry, asymmetry, and repetition to create eye-catching compositions. Audio-reactive elements were also added in the video so the visuals react to the music and feel more alive.
